Wendy S. Williams delivers research-based communication and collaboration workshops to improve workplace dynamics and unlock teams’ potential. Leveraging research in empathy and mindfulness, psychology, and business, Wendy’s tailored trainings have enabled organizations large and small to grow in new ways and reach their next level of success.
Wendy received her Ph.D. in English from TCU in 2012. She has master’s degrees in literature and theology and a Koru Mindfulness Certification. Wendy’s research on the British author George Eliot sparked her interest in empathy and inspired her to research empathy from a multi-disciplinary standpoint. She has now been researching and teaching courses in empathy and mindfulness for over ten years as a professor in the honors college at TCU.
Over time, after seeing and hearing widespread demand for greater empathy in workplaces, Wendy developed her empathy program for organizations and business. She draws from her own research plus that of specialists in related fields and organizations focusing on empathy in the workplace.
Like so many of us, I spent the majority of my life trying to maintain a sense of control over everything around me: my family, my career, and my social world. For the most part it worked! I kept busy managing my growing family, lively social life, and fulfilling career as a professor at Texas Christian University.
Then I faced a series of challenges that turned my world upside down, including a cancer diagnosis. I was devastated, and in that devastation, I came to realize I could not control my life circumstances. I could only control how I faced them.
The need to control is rooted in anxiety. I realized anxiety was my biggest personal challenge, and it was robbing me of peace and joy in my daily life. I set out to understand this problem by turning my research focus from 19th-century literature (my academic specialization) to empathy and mindfulness. Then I created courses on these subjects to share what I was learning with students who were also experiencing increasing levels of anxiety due to the challenges related to coming of age during a pandemic. Through this work, I found the means to help manage my anxiety, better connect with my students, and create stronger and more communicative relationships with my loved ones.
We can never fully grasp the gravity and depth of someone else’s life experience. What we can do is open our minds and make an effort to understand each other’s perspectives, feelings, and experiences. Our empathic training system helps you to better understand and open your own mind before learning to better connect with others.
Our system emphasizes practical techniques that improve the everyday life of each and every attendee. This aspect has resulted in outcomes longer lasting and more effective than traditional EQ programs.
Every day we face stressors that lead to conflict, anxiety, and broken communication. We can fix these challenges, together, using practical skills to improve our lives, relationships, and sense of well-being.
